This technique will make you motivated instantly.
It is very simple. Follow the following steps:
- Pick a task that is important to you, but you still have not done anything about it.
- Now, hope that you will do the task. Really, wish and hope that life will turn out the way you want it.For a moment, notice how it feels to hope. Do you feel better about the task? Do you feel closer to the completion or possibility, or is it just a distant image that you don’t control?
- Now, know that you will do the task. Absolutely know that it will be done. How do you feel when you know it will work? How is your body and attitude compared to when you where hoping?
To know is much more direct; there is real feeling that you can do it. The task is within grasp. Knowing also tends to calm you down because you know it will happen; there is no reason to doubt the outcome.
When you hope you are not sure. In fact you are in doubt.
Resistance
I used to say this idea is silly and I used to argue that it won’t change anything. I used to say that I can’t just fly, swaying my arms just because I think I “know”.
Then someone told me to get real and reminded me that this idea is more useful for things I really wanted and could accomplish, rather than focusing on unimportant fantasies. What is worth spending time on; I could apply this idea to something I had delayed or I could just come up with silly arguments.
This woke me up and I noticed how resistant I was to actually do something. Starting to “know” and having the actual possibility to do something made me uneasy.
Why? Because actually doing something would lead me to a places I did not know about. I realized I feared the unknown more than anything.
“Knowing vs. hoping” is more about your attitude and not about getting caught up in analysing what is possible or not.
Grace and fear
Suddenly someone tells us we are capable, or we realize that we can do something. Immediately we come up with reasons that this is not true or that we should be more modest.
The reaction to your sudden freedom is just fear. There is no goodness about keeping yourself down, belittling oneself. That kind of behaviour is just dumb old fear trying to control you from expanding who you are. Expansion is the unknown and fear is protecting you from the unknown. Obviously fear knows nothing about the unknown. How come we still listen to the reasons of fear?
When you start to practice “knowing” you are capable you will feel feel strong, positive and that the future is possible. Then at the same time, the ground might be a little shaky and you might start to look for safety, some safe ground where things feel familiar. You feel afraid.
Or maybe it is just a feeling that you are truly alive?
What truly matters?
The question is: Do you want to live safely and protected, like let’s say, in your mom’s womb or do you want to get wake up and live the real life like an adventure? What matters to you? What is important today?
Whatever you choose, you will eventually die one day. You don’t know when; it might be tomorrow, in 10 or 50 years. But it will happen. This is in fact the only certainty you truly have. With the time you have left, are you living it fully?
Know you can do what is important right now.
