The law of attraction, why it does not work.

by Samuel Törnqvist

law-of-attraction Right now, the law of attraction is a very popular concept. Almost every self-help guru or internet-marketer mentions it. I feel I am one of the few that do not subscribe to this principle.

But I don’t want to speak negatively about this. I think it has some benefits and I use some of them myself. My point is that there is so much more to learn and only subscribing to this belief I find rather limited. I think that even though this might truly help you in some ways I think it will lead to frustration eventually if heavily relied on.

Of course it is good to have a more positive outlook on your possibilities. I support that full on. My angle is that the law of attraction speaks mainly to your conscious mind and that is truly a tiny part of your total consciousness and affects very little indeed.

Even if this principle does affect your subconscious, it is worth mentioning that it is still just your ego, and ego is also a very tiny part of the whole. You are so much more than just the ego. Remember, conscious and unconscious is all ego and the conscious part is just the tip of the iceberg.

The ego is not the master of the game.

Ego wants to think so but it just isn’t, no matter how positive it is or how many objects it “attracts”. The problem with the ego is that it mainly rejects. It does not swallow the whole; it has very sophisticated opinions about what is right and wrong. Ego itself is the cause of your suffering because rejection is nothing but contraction.

Still, ego is fine and necessary. It is a part of the truth and the point is not to try to get rid of it – Only ego thinks that way.
Ego is trying to solve a mystery that does not need a solution. It is trying to find itself by getting rid of a lot of things it does not like.

The whole is whole, not partial.

Ego is not fine with how things are. It wants this and that; it has preferences ONLY because what is happening now is not ok, according to ego. “if I only had…. then I would be happy!” etc.

“Ok, so then I will accept now, is that it?”
Yes, that is what ego will say. It is another “attempt” to try to solve a mystery that does not need to be solved. Ego still makes a distinction between accepting and not accepting.

I mean, when you did not “accept now”, what were you doing differently? Why is it so different when you suddenly try to “accept now”? Do you see the contraction in that behavior? “Now” is just another concept to ego, not the truth.

Ego lives in the world of concepts, the world of captured and inflexible ideas, not in the world of what is. Ego cannot accept because it is rejection itself. Ego uses concepts to construct a “new reality” because it feels completely outside of reality. It believes it has to force itself into reality by living in a “certain way”. But a “certain way” is disconnected and fragmented because it is not the whole.

Reality is here, nothing needs to be changed about it.

Hey, I have a big ego myself. Look at this blog! :)

No, point in condemning anything. Ego is fine. I just wanted to explain why the law of attraction, in my mind, does not really have that much more control of yourself making you suddenly “attract” more than before. And more of what exactly? It is all around you if you just take a moment and notice.

Ego itself is not the problem. It is the belief that ego is the only thing there is and that reality is fragmented that cause problems.

There are too many undiscovered shadows in your psyche that has stronger desirers than your conscious mind. They will contradict your conscious attempts and you will not achieve what you “think you want”. It will lead you to frustration eventually, battling against yourself because what you think you want, is only a small part of your conscious.

Only deep spiritual work, taught by a master from a recognized lineage, mixed with good psychotherapy can truly give you a chance to connect with the entire you.

No, you don’t have to do this. It all depends on what matters to you. But the law of attraction can not claim this understanding, not even by a long shot.

But, on the other hand, I encourage anything that promotes “understand yourself” which the law of attraction does to some extent. A more positive outlook and a belief that you are capable and that you deserve what you need, is part of the Work.

So try it out even though I would recommend other things. Everybody has their own path and my opinion about this is not the only truth. (Hell no…)

I would love to hear what you think about it. Do you like the law of attraction or not? Maybe you can teach me something new?

Cheers!                                                                                                                        photo credit

Samuel, you write: Only deep spiritual work, taught by a master from a recognized lineage, mixed with good psychotherapy can truly give you a chance to connect with the entire you.
I mean this is not true. There are other possibilities, e.g. a deep and overwhelming spiritual experience which throw its light in the darkest parts of the soul and change you for ever. Therefore it’s not necessary to be taught by a master from a recognized lineage. You have it in your own spirit.

Yes, of course it exists in you and perhaps it sounded a little harsh what I said? After all it is my opinion about it. The truth is that there are many ways but I do truly believe what I mentioned is very important if you are going to work “successfully”. And my point is more in regards to the “law of attraction”

There is a difference between states of insights and how you interpret and use these experiences and how they will serve you and the community.

Everybody has experiences. Even terrorists have deep spiritual experiences but I think we all agree that they could use some morals and training from a good and healthy teachers on how to interpret the messages they get from their experiences.

It is not the experience that is wrong, it is the interpretation.

I think a teacher is part of the work because we are not separated beings having just our “own” experience. We have parents for a reason. Of course, then we out grow them.

In the end it is not about the teacher and you can do it all yourself of course. BUT, I learned piano faster from a good pianist who knew how to play rather than just me trying myself. No point in reinventing the wheel. If I hire an “unrecognized” teacher there is bigger risk I am wasting my time. Recognition is important and this is one of the reasons the buddhists have reincarnated teachers and leaders; it is a system of having teachers that you can truly trust that the majority agree on.

What the society is after is the same as morals. It is the “we”-space. It is what you and I are together and this a very important part of spirituality, in my mind.

If you want to learn Zen fully you absolutely need to work with a master. But there are other ways of course.

Thanks for your take on this.
